Cookie policy

Which cookies this site uses, the three types you can choose between, and how to change your mind.

Last updated

A cookie is a small file placed on your device when you visit a website. Some are needed for the site to work; others help the website owner understand how the site is used, or measure advertising. Similar technologies, such as storage in your browser and tracking pixels, are covered by this policy too, and we call them all "cookies" here.

When you first visit, we ask which optional cookies you are happy for us to use. Nothing optional is set until you say yes, and choosing "Necessary only" is as easy as accepting.

Strictly necessary — always on

These keep the site working and cannot be switched off. They do not track you.

  • Your cookie choice, remembered in your browser so we do not ask on every page. Kept for 12 months, after which we ask again.
  • Whether you have closed one of our pop-up messages, so we do not keep showing it to you. Depending on the message this is kept for the day, the week, or only until you close the tab.
  • For nursery staff who sign in to our enquiry system: a sign-in cookie that lasts 30 minutes from the last use and no more than 12 hours. Visitors never receive it.

A few things on the site come from other companies and load with the page, because the page does not work without them. They are not cookies we set, and the notice does not switch them off: the maps are drawn by Mapbox (with its usage reporting turned off); families’ reviews come from daynurseries.co.uk; and videos play from YouTube, in its privacy-enhanced mode, or from Vimeo, which we ask not to track you. If you choose "use my location" on the nursery finder, your location is used to find the nearest nurseries and journey times and is not kept.

Statistics — optional, off until you allow it

These tell us how visitors find and use the site — which pages help families and which do not — so we can improve it.

  • Google Analytics (GA4), loaded through Google Tag Manager. Cookies: _ga and _ga_<id>, typically kept for up to 2 years.

Information collected by Google may include your approximate location and the device and browser you use. If you are signed in to a Google account, you can see and delete what Google holds through Google’s My Activity page (myactivity.google.com).

Marketing — optional, off until you allow it

These help us see which adverts bring families to us, and show our adverts to people who have visited the site. They are set by advertising and social media companies, who may combine them with what they already know about you.

  • Google Ads, through Google Tag Manager — measures which adverts lead to an enquiry or a tour. Cookies such as _gcl_au, typically kept for up to 90 days.
  • Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram) — measures which Facebook and Instagram adverts lead to an enquiry or a tour. Cookie _fbp, typically kept for up to 90 days.
  • Our Instagram feed — the feed shown on the site is provided by Instagram and its widget, which set their own cookies. Until you allow marketing cookies we show a placeholder instead.

Changing your mind

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time: use Manage cookies (also at the foot of every page). Turning a type off takes effect straight away; the page reloads to make sure of it.

You can also delete or block cookies in your browser’s settings, or ask it to warn you before one is stored. Blocking strictly necessary cookies means we cannot remember your choice, so you will be asked again on each visit. Further information on deleting or controlling cookies is available at www.aboutcookies.org.
