Why outdoors

Where children learn best

Everyday experience of the natural world is essential. Outdoors, children move more, think more freely and discover the wonder of how living things connect. It’s where confidence is built, curiosity runs wild and bodies grow strong.

That’s why time outside isn’t a treat at My Ohana, it’s woven through every day.

What the outdoors gives them

Four things that simply grow better in the fresh air.

  • Connection to nature

Daily time outdoors builds curiosity about seasons, weather and wildlife, and a lifelong care for the world around them.

  • Confidence through challenge

Manageable challenges like climbing, balancing and building grow resilience, good judgement and real self-belief.

  • Healthy, active bodies

Fresh air and active play develop strength, balance and coordination, and a genuine love of moving.

  • Curiosity & discovery

Mud, water, loose parts and open-ended play spark questions, problem-solving and wonder.

Our gardens

Spaces that invite adventure

Our outdoor spaces are a rich environment for every area of learning, designed for exploration, movement and a genuine connection to the natural world.

Nurture
Children plant seeds, water plants and watch them grow, fostering responsibility and an appreciation for nature.
Movement
Our spaces offer manageable challenges like climbing and balancing that build confidence and decision-making, enriching every child’s learning.
Community
With play essential to learning, structured and free play give children ways to explore, practise social skills and solve problems together.

There’s no such thing as bad weather

Only the wrong wellies. Rain, frost or sunshine, we’re outside, because the changing seasons are some of the best teachers there are. Here’s what helps your little one make the most of it:

  • Warm layers
  • Waterproofs & wellies
  • Sun hat & sun cream
  • A spare set of clothes (mud is part of the fun!)

Outdoor learning FAQs

The questions parents ask us most.

Have more questions?
  • Do children really go outside in all weather?

Yes, we’re outdoors every day, year-round. The changing seasons and weather are some of the best teachers there are. With the right clothing, puddles, frost and wind become part of the adventure.

  • Is outdoor play safe?

Absolutely. We use a sensible risk-benefit approach so children can take on manageable challenges with qualified practitioners alongside them, in secure, thoughtfully designed gardens.

  • What should my child wear?

Comfortable layers they can move and get messy in, plus weather-appropriate kit, waterproofs and wellies for wet days, a sun hat and cream when it’s warm. A spare change of clothes is always handy.

  • Is your outdoor learning nature-based?

Yes. Our approach is nature-rich and child-led, woven through everyday play in our gardens and local green spaces rather than offered as a one-off session.
